Are there predictors of the need for allogeneic blood transfusion (ABT) in patients undergoing arthroplasty for acute hip fractures?

Authors: Paddy Kenny, Giedrius Kvederas, Arjun Saxena, John Gibbons

RECOMMENDATION: Preoperative predictors for the need for ABT include (1) anemia and (2) dementia and hypoalbuminemia. (3) Anticoagulation or anti-platelet medications do not predict the need for ABT. There is confl icting data with regard to the need for ABT when comparing hemiarthroplasty (HA) to total hip arthroplasty (THA).

LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: (1) Strong, (2) Limited, (3) Moderate

DELEGATE VOTE: Agree: 100%, Disagree: 0%, Abstain: 0% (Unanimous, Strongest Consensus)
